The San Francisco Korean American History Museum is devoted to providing accessible and free educational pathways for underresourced individuals all across the globe through cultural conferences, fellowships, educational materials, and youth leadership. The museum hopes to be a safe and welcoming place for all to empathetically discover their cultural heritage through critical learning and mutual understanding.
What is our Why?
In the 21st century, the United States is increasingly defined by multiculturalism and rising ethnic and racial diversity, where identity is no longer understood through a single background or tradition. Our country become a powerful symbol of modern belonging, symbolizing how people often carry multiple identities at once—Korean-American, Mexican-American, African-American, and more.
Understanding one's heritage, then, becomes essential in recognizing the histories, motivations, sacrifices, and social movements that shaped those identities. Only by honoring and learning from shared cultural past can future generations create rooted, meaningful change.
The San Francisco Korean American History Museum is energized by the simple yet powerful mission: to help us understand our place in California's history. It offers pathways not only to learn about Korean American history and activism, but to also explore our connections with other interracial and diverse communities.
The Museum is committed to ensuring that all youth, regardless of background, feel empowered to embrace, explore, and critically investigate their personal histories in the United States. We hold ourselves to equitable standards of access across gender, identity, race, ethnicity, and other minority-based experiences.
We recognize that every student comes from different resources, circumstances, and positions of privilege or (dis)advantage. In response, we strive to provide fair access to all the opportunities we offer. This includes maintaining our nearly zero-fee programs, such as our fellowship, while continuing to raise funds with the goal of providing scholarships for students to attend conferences and other educational opportunities for no cost.
